Every year, Chennai-based students account for over 90 per cent of candidates in the 50 per cent quota of seats for Tamil Nadu at the National Institute of Technology Tiruchi. The obvious reason is that the significance of the All India Enginee ring Entrance Examination (AIEEE) has not been recognised very well in the rest of the state.
Approximately 13,653 seats are filled through centralised AlEEE counselling every year in NITs, deemed universities and .other government-funded educational institutions across the country.
NIT - Tiruchi is keen to ensure that students from all parts of Tamil Nadu get equal opportunity. It is for this reason that Rotoract Club ofNational Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T), has been creating awareness on AlEEE bY'conducting mock tests.
Several factors should attract students - the impending capacity expansion in the event of the OBC quota taking shape, attractive OBC scholarships that cover up to 90 per cent of the tuition fee, and favourable family income norms for candidates from middle-income group to qualify for the scholarship.
Students from allover the State must accord utmost priority to undergo education in a top-class institution with a rich academic ambience and excellent faculty, advocated the Institute Director M. Chidambaram.
Of course, AlEEE is not just about entrance to NIT, Tiruchi. Several academics feel that candidates from Tamil Nadu should not miss the opportunity to join other NITs under the 'Other States' quota, taking into consideration their placement record as a criteria for application.
Dr. Chidambaram feels that schools should take on the responsibility of preparing students for the competitive examination. They should also consider the cost-effective idea of imparting webbased preparation to students during week-ends. Candidates with probing minds who are capable of self-study will succeed, he said.
The question papers for AlEEE are based on a common minimum syllabus (Class XI and XII) taught in different state boards, says K. Siva Kumar of Brilliant Tutorials, Tiruchi, based on information sourced from the AIEEE 2008 Information Bulletin.
As per the pattern of AlEEE 2007, there were 120 questions of three marks each. There were 40 objective-type questions each for Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
